Luke Skywalker: “I don’t believe it.”
Master Yoda: “That’s why you fail.”
-Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
Yes, I’m a Star Wars geek. Somehow, I always manage to find small lessons while watching superhero or Sci-Fi movies. When The Force Awakens came out, I decided to have a marathon of all the classic Star Wars movies prior to seeing it in 3D on the big screen. Excitement wouldn’t be a sufficient enough word to express my anticipation for that movie. It felt as if I have was waiting for centuries for the new installation of the Star Wars saga. I love Han Solo, Anakin Skywalker (the young one), and cute little Yoda! Side Note: The Force Awakens was AWESOME!
Star Wars fanatic, I am. But this post is not about my love for Star Wars, although, I could write several long posts about my love for the series. This post is about a quick lesson that was reinforced while watching Empire Strikes Back particularly when Luke Skywalker was beginning to learn how to use the force and control his powers as a Jedi. If you haven’t seen any of the Star Wars movies, I’m sure this reference is going right over your head. Go ahead… Watch the movie, then come back and finish reading. Trust me, you’ll enjoy it!
In one scene of the movie, Master Yoda, a tiny little creature, yet powerful Jedi was able to lift a ridiculously humongous space ship by thinking about it. Luke was astonished and quickly responded by saying “I don’t believe it!” Yoda replies, “That’s why you fail”. This type of lesson can be easily applied to real, non-cinematic life. There are some dreams and goals that look far-fetched and huge and will cause you to think there’s no way that little ole you can accomplish it. Well, I want to you to know that whatever you believe will manifest in reality. Bottom line, if you believe you can’t do it, you can’t do it. If you believe you CAN do it, you can do it with some effort, of course.
You want that job? Pray, believe, prepare, apply, and get it!
You want that car? Pray, believe, prepare, go shopping, and get it!
You want that husband? Pray, believe, prepare to be a wife, look good, and he’ll find you.
(Ha! You thought I was going to say “go get him”, didn’t you? 5 years ago, I would’ve said that, but the Bible suggests that the man should find you. But honey, present yourself so he can see that you’re available to be chosen.)
You want to start a business? Pray, believe, prepare, create a business plan, and establish that business!
See… There’s a cycle happening here. The steps from desire to achievement is prayer, believing, preparing, and doing. After praying to ask God for a something special, don’t just drop the ball. Believe that it will happen. Your belief will activate all of the other steps in the cycle to bring forth the outcome you prayed for.
In my long life of 30-something years, I’ve learned that the measure of your belief correlates with the probability of success. When there is lack of belief in your ability to do something, there will be a lower chance of achieving it.
Belief Controls Your Thoughts
The Cambridge Dictionary defines the word Believe as a verb to “think that something is true, correct, or real”. Essentially, faith is holding firm to your belief until an outcome happens. Hebrews 11:1 explains that faith is the “substance of things hoped for, the evidence of thing not seen.” When you ask God to help you achieve a certain goal, visualize it in your mind as if it already happened. Visualization will activate the positive self-talk and you will feel as if you already received it. You’re expecting it. You’re HOPING for it…take a look at Hebrews 11:1 again. You already have it in the spiritual because God already gave it to you. Now, you’re merely going through the motions until you receive your blessing in the natural.
Words Prompt Action from You and God
Have you ever heard that life and death is in your tongue? It’s true. What you say can change everything. It can weaken your faith. Speaking negativity can cause you to feel down and hopeless. On the other hand, it can make you excited and full of joy. It will motivate you to start taking steps to make that dream a reality. What you say must line up with what you believe. If you have the faith and believe that you can achieve something, then say it! Affirm it. Speaking gives power. Speaking attracts the attention of God. Faith pleases Him and he delights in us declaring anything by the power of the Holy Spirit.
What you say stimulates God to act on your behalf. In Mark 11:22-24, Jesus explains to the disciples that they must command things to happen and God will honor it.
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Bill Hagin explains this concept so succinctly when he says:
“Once you believe, you have to speak! 2 Corinthians 4:13 makes this clear as well, ‘We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak.’ We believe, therefore we speak!”
Once you start talking about what’s about to happen, watch everything fall into place. It’s happened for me so many times. There was a dream job that I really desired. After applying for two long years to acquire a position within a particular organization, I started to get discouraged. But then, I remembered that I need to outwardly claim what I wanted in the name of Jesus and allow God to open the doors. I started talking constantly about landing a job at that organization to God, myself, anyone, and everyone. I’m sure people got tired of hearing about the job I’m about to get…probably with doubt in their hearts. But God knows how to show himself strong. When you tell others that God is going to do something, he will not leave you hanging. He’s able to perform. I’m telling you, God orchestrated everything beautifully. He placed people in the right positions at the perfect time to help me obtain the job I was constantly praying and believing for. I don’t even remember applying for that particular position. I was applying for so many positions that I wasn’t paying attention. That position was PERFECT for me and provided plenty of opportunities for career progression.
Notice, I said that I was applying for jobs. Instead of sitting idle, eating Doritos, watching Real Housewives, and waiting for a job to just drop into my lap, I had to grind by researching, applying for positions, and improving my interviewing skills. Laziness is not allowed! Back up your faith. When you take action, God will take over. Faith without works is dead…so get to work! (James 2:20) Our beliefs affects what we say, which, in turn, affects our actions and level of persistence. Don’t give up!
In Summary… Let me break this down:
- Believing (Faith) controls your thoughts,
- Your thoughts prompt you to say affirmations of your future achievement,
- What you say stimulates action and God’s intervention,
- Action achieves the goal with God’s help
What are you believing God for? Do you have the faith that you’ll receive it? Was there ever a time when you desired something, but it was a small chance you could get and God defied all odds? Share your testimony! I hope my rant has been helpful to you. God bless! -VK
